Psalm 91 for Families: A Shield of Protection Against Harm

Psalm 91  (RSV)

  1. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
  2. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
    my God, in whom I trust.”
  3. For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence;
  4. he will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
  5. You will not fear the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
  6. nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
  7. A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
  8. You will only look with your eyes
    and see the recompense of the wicked.
  9. Because you have made the Lord your refuge,
    the Most High your habitation,
  10. no evil shall befall you,
    no scourge come near your tent.
  11. For he will give his angels charge of you
    to guard you in all your ways.
  12. On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.
  13. You will tread on the lion and the adder;
    the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
  14. Because he cleaves to me in love, I will deliver him;
    I will protect him, because he knows my name.
  15. When he calls to me, I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will rescue him and honor him.
  16. With long life I will satisfy him,
    and show him my salvation.

Understanding the Promises of Psalm 91

Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful psalms in the Bible, providing divine assurance and promises of protection. It speaks of God as a refuge, fortress, and shield for those who trust in Him. This psalm offers comfort, especially for families seeking God’s protection and security in a world full of dangers.

The central message of Psalm 91 is that those who trust in God and seek His presence are shielded from harm. Whether it is physical danger, emotional turmoil, or spiritual attacks, God’s protection surrounds His people like a fortress. The psalm promises deliverance from unseen dangers, both day and night, and assures that no evil will come near those who take refuge in God.

The Secret Place of the Most High: A Refuge for Families

Psalm 91 begins by highlighting the importance of dwelling in the “secret place” of the Most High. This place symbolizes a deep, intimate relationship with God, where His presence provides comfort and protection. The idea of dwelling in the secret place refers to making God the center of your life, prioritizing His presence above all else.

For families, this is a reminder that God’s protection is most powerfully experienced when they make Him their foundation. Families who trust in God’s sovereignty and seek to live according to His will find that they are shielded from the fears and anxieties that so often plague the world around them.

The Benefits of God’s Protection for Families

When families make God their refuge, they experience a sense of peace and security that cannot be found anywhere else. The psalm assures us that God covers us with His wings and provides shelter from harm. Families who seek God’s protection can stand firm against any threat—whether it is sickness, financial struggles, or even spiritual battles.

God’s protection is not passive; it is active. He promises to deliver from snares, pestilence, and attacks that may come in various forms. Whether we face health challenges, emotional burdens, or the stresses of daily life, God stands as a mighty fortress for those who trust in Him.

A Prayer for God’s Refuge and Protection

“Heavenly Father, we come before You as a family, seeking Your protection and refuge. We trust in Your promises and know that You are our shield in times of trouble. Cover us with Your wings, and let Your presence be our stronghold. We ask that You protect us from all harm, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. May we always dwell in the secret place of the Most High, trusting in Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

The Shield and Buckler of God’s Truth

In verse 4, the psalmist declares that God’s truth is our shield and buckler. A shield is a protective tool used to block physical attacks, while a buckler is a smaller, hand-held shield used to provide additional defense. Both symbols represent God’s defense against the attacks of the enemy.

For families, this speaks to the power of truth in protecting them from deception, fear, and the lies of the enemy. The truth of God’s Word provides clarity and strength in times of confusion. It offers protection against the fears that can overwhelm us in uncertain times. When families hold on to God’s truth, they remain safe under His protection.

Using God’s Word as a Shield

The power of God’s Word is an essential aspect of Psalm 91. It is the truth of the Scriptures that acts as a spiritual shield, protecting our minds and hearts from the lies of the enemy. Families that base their lives on the Word of God find that His promises are a shield in every circumstance.

The enemy may try to sow doubt, fear, and confusion, but when we stand firm on God’s promises, we are protected from those attacks. The truth of God’s Word acts as a constant reminder that He is with us and that He is faithful to deliver us from every danger.

A Prayer for the Shield of God’s Truth

“Lord, we thank You for Your truth that shields us from all harm. We stand on Your Word, knowing that it is a firm foundation in times of trouble. Protect our family from the lies and deceit of the enemy, and help us to hold fast to the promises in Your Word. We trust that You will defend us with Your truth and bring us through every challenge stronger in faith. Amen.”

Protection from Nighttime Fears and Daytime Dangers

Psalm 91 promises that God’s protection extends both day and night. The psalmist specifically mentions the terror that comes by night and the dangers that threaten during the day. This reflects the reality that fear can strike at any time, whether in the darkness of night or in the busyness of day.

For families, this assurance is incredibly comforting. God’s protection does not take a break. Whether it is the quiet anxiety of the night or the visible dangers of the day, God’s shield surrounds us at all times. Families can rest assured that no matter when danger strikes, they are safe in His hands.

God’s Protection Over Nighttime Fears

The night can bring with it a unique set of fears—whether it’s fear of the unknown, nightmares, or the stresses that seem to grow larger in the quiet hours. However, Psalm 91 reassures us that God is present and watching over us at night. Families can lay down to sleep, knowing that God’s angels guard them.

It is during the night that our thoughts may race and fears may grow. However, in the shelter of God’s presence, we can find rest and peace. The psalm encourages us to trust in God’s protection, especially during those times when fear feels more tangible.

A Prayer for Peace During the Night

“God, we thank You for Your protection that never sleeps. We bring our nighttime fears to You, trusting that You will guard us as we rest. Help us to find peace and comfort in knowing that You are with us, even in the darkest hours. May Your angels surround us and keep us safe through the night. Amen.”

No Evil Shall Befall You: Assurance of Safety

Psalm 91 contains a powerful promise that no evil shall befall those who make the Lord their refuge. This promise is not just for physical protection; it also encompasses spiritual and emotional safety. God is able to protect His people from the dangers that seek to harm them.

For families, this assurance is profound. We live in a world where harm can come from many sources—disease, accidents, violence, and even emotional turmoil. But God promises that if we trust in Him, He will shield us from these dangers.

God’s Protection from Harmful Forces

God’s protection covers all aspects of life. Whether it is the physical harm we might face from the world around us or the spiritual attacks we experience, God’s promise remains the same. Families can walk confidently, knowing that they are safe in His care. No weapon formed against them will prosper, and no force can overcome the protection God has set in place.

A Prayer for Safety and Protection from Harm

“Lord, we trust in Your promise that no evil shall befall us. We ask for Your protection over our family, covering us from all forms of harm. We know that You are our shield and fortress, and that Your presence is our safety. Protect us from sickness, danger, and any attack from the enemy. May Your peace reign in our hearts, and may we always feel Your protective hand upon us. Amen.”

God’s Angels Guarding Your Family

In verse 11, Psalm 91 promises that God will give His angels charge over us, to keep us in all our ways. This speaks to God’s active involvement in our lives. He sends His angels to guard, protect, and guide us, ensuring that we are kept safe from all harm.

For families, this is a powerful reminder that they are not alone. God’s angels are assigned to watch over them, guiding them through life’s challenges and protecting them from dangers both seen and unseen.

The Role of Angels in Family Protection

Angels play a vital role in God’s protection plan. They are messengers and warriors, sent by God to guard His people. Families can take comfort in knowing that God’s angels are on assignment to keep them safe. These heavenly beings are active in the lives of believers, working on their behalf to ensure that they are protected from harm.

A Prayer for Angelic Protection

“Father, we thank You for Your angels who guard and protect us. We trust in Your promise that they are always watching over us. We ask that You send Your angels to protect our family from any harm. Guide us with Your wisdom, and surround us with Your heavenly hosts. May we always feel safe in Your care, knowing that Your angels are watching over us. Amen.”
